Unleashed: Civil 3D 2017 and InfraWorks 360

The release of Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2017 and the latest Autodesk® InfraWorks® 360 software is finally here!  And we think you’ll love the host of enhancements and new capabilities that these new versions bring.  From enhanced core capabilities to exciting new features, these tools can help you streamline project workflows, improve decision making and achieve the best outcomes at lower costs for your projects.

Autodesk InfraWorks 360

InfraWorks 360 is Autodesk’s BIM platform that enables parametric model-based planning and design of civil infrastructure in the context of the real-world.

In February, Autodesk announced reduced pricing and a significantly simplified packaging of the InfraWorks 360 offering.  With the new packaging, you get access to the core capabilities in InfraWorks 360 along with the advanced functionality found in the Road Design, Bridge Design and Drainage Design application modules – modules that were previously licensed separately – all in a single offering.

This latest release of InfraWorks 360 delivers improved design to detailed engineering workflows along with enhanced interoperability with Civil 3D and Autodesk® Revit®.  In addition, the latest release gives you the ability to design in an even richer, real-world context of your project’s environment.  Finally, as of April 18, 2016, InfraWorks 360 is now easily purchased directly from the Autodesk eStore.

So, what’s new in InfraWorks 360?

Enhanced Interoperability.  In this latest release, you can now bring roundabout design models from InfraWorks 360 into Civil 3D.  You can also take your bridge designs easily into Revit for more detailed design work.  With improved interoperability between InfraWorks 360 and Civil 3D, and Revit, changes you make to your InfraWorks 360 model are reflected throughout the detailed design phase, enabling you to more easily test and optimize design alternatives quickly.

Multi-modal Simulation.  If you’re an urban or traffic planner, you realize how vital it is to any economy to have effective and efficient movement of people and products through urban and rural environments.  In the latest InfraWorks 360, we’ve delivered a new, innovative multi-modal simulation capability that combines the power of an integrated geometric model with analysis functionality to help you study the impact of your designs to the movement of buses and trains; parking areas; taxis, ride sharing, autonomous vehicles; walking, cycling and other personal modes of travel.  With it, you now have a tool that can help you design more attractive, economical and ecologically sustainable environments for your citizens.

Better Design Context.  A compelling value of InfraWorks 360 is to enable you to plan and design projects in a real-world context of your project’s surroundings.  We’ve made improvement to Model Builder that facilitates even better design in-context – allowing you to quickly model more accurate designs within a real-world view earlier in the project lifecycle.  Now users can overlay DWG files, in addition to raster images, over InfraWorks 360 models with full location, scale, rotation control and correlation tools; and, we’ve enhanced users’ ability to take advantage of data rich sources like Autodesk® ReCap™, 2D DWG files, Raster Overlays and Open Street Map data.

Detailed Engineering.  The latest release of InfraWorks 360 provides you with a number of improvements that enhance your detailed engineering workflows for transportation design including support for modeling merges, diverges and weaving lanes; new traffic simulation support for ramps and turn lanes, and enhanced editing for roundabouts and bridge girder sections.  This release also introduces the Contextual Stack, enabling you to have access to and edit design data about specific assets you select such as roads, pipe network parts, bridge parts, among others – giving you greater detailed engineering-level control over your designs.

AutoCAD Civil 3D

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 helps streamline legacy 2D or traditional design software workflows, centralize the management of design and drafting standards, and better integrate with Autodesk InfraWorks 360.

Interoperability with InfraWorks 360.  Connected workflows between AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 and InfraWorks 360 help you optimize your designs faster, collaborate more efficiently across your different teams and locations, and communicate more effectively with your clients and public stakeholders.

Project Management.  AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 offers new features to help improve legacy workflows, including: Corridor Data Shortcut (DREF), option to Cache DREF Surface, Subfolders for Objects, Streamlined Reference Creation, and Reference Styles Utilities.  With these features you can now easily create data shortcuts for corridors and reference them in other drawings, create multiple DREFs at once, and simplify the management of drawing styles, allowing teams to work better together and enforce standards more easily.

Corridor Modeling.  Enhancements in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 provide you with greater flexibility and accuracy in your corridor modeling workflows.  Feature lines can now be used as a corridor baseline, corner shapes are automatically cleaned up and more accurate, multiple feature lines can be extracted from corridor regions and, corridor solids can now be assigned property data that is retained throughout the design workflow.

Usability.  We’ve provided you with new pressure pipe content for HDPE, PVC and steel pipes in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017.  In addition, a “No Site” option for Feature Lines now allows you to better control design elements that make up your model.

Data Exchange.  AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 now helps improve your productivity further with capabilities that allow you to create your own property set definitions, manually add them to any drawing object, and use the property data in other applications such as Autodesk® Navisworks® software and Autodesk® BIM 360™ Glue®.
